Magnesium reacts with water and generates bubbles of hydrogen, transforming it into magnesium hydroxide. This changes the water to a weak ionized alkaline water and raises the pH level to approximately 10.5.

Alkaline water works as soap when decomposing oil and fat. Therefore, magnesium hydroxide becomes like soap by reacting to sebum, when washing dirty laundry.
