Up for sale is a one-off designer table and bench set I have been working on over the last year as one of many passion projects.

This table is brand new and unused.

I sourced this timber 3 years ago from a Trademe listing. It was all painted white and had recently been recovered from an old hotel in the Wairarapa that was being demolished. These lengths of Rimu had been used as handrails. It is the driest and most amazing timber I have ever worked with.

After making items for my own home, I was left with enough to make this table and bench set along with another table design that I am about to start making.

I did not want to waste any of this beautiful resource and the design was dictated by the size of the pieces I had left over.

No expense has been spared in the making of this table. All joints are double-doweled and glued. To achieve such a thin design for the tabletop I have routed in three 5mm steel supports that are slotted to allow for seasonal wood movement. These also provide strength for when people lean on it along with keeping the top dead flat.

The metal brackets and nameplate have been laser cut and folded locally.

It has been finished in Rubio Mono Coat which is a fantastic hard wax oil finish. This is extremely durable and is easy to repair. I for one am not a massive fan of coating such beautiful wood in epoxy or polyurethane.

Working with native timber is very special and to be able to give this resource another life makes me proud.

This table will last for years, unlike the furniture you can get from big box stores. I hope this is something that will get passed down in someone’s family.

This will be the first table I have sold under my brand My Wasted Sundays and maybe one day it could be worth even more if I carry on designing and manufacturing and make a name for myself.
