A piece of NZ Rail history. This NZR wind up jack appears to be off the NZ built W238 loco which was built at Addington in the late 1880s and worked with fell centre rails on 1/15 sections of track on the Rimutakas and other lines until the 1950s (I’ve got my information from the article below but I’ve since been told it w238 didn’t work on the Rimutakas and wasn’t a Fell engine and to be fair I’ve got no real idea). W238 was apparently scrapped but it’s sister engine w192 has been preserved. I’ve been reliably informed this jack would have been part of the kit on board to help with derailments. The body of the jack is brass with NZR cast into it. The base is made of steel which has some flaky rust but is still sound. The thread in the base still turns and the ratchet up top still works. Measures near enough to .6m wide and .6m high. Weight about 30kg guessing). Has the very faint number w238 pressed into it which I have tried to show in the photo.
