Original gold coloured coin with leaflet.

Issued by: National Bank of Poland.
Struck at: Polish Mint PLC, Warsaw, 28 March 2008.

The coin commemorates the lost generations of the Polish nation who were exiled to Siberia.

Poles first came to Siberia as prisoners of war in the first half of the 17th century. In the last two decades of the 19th century, members of the underground revolutionary movement and other political exiles were expelled to Siberia.

By 1910, up to 52 000 Poles lived in Tsarist Siberia. Most of these people returned to Poland during and after World War 1.

In the Stalinist era, however, the GULAG (in Russian: Glawnoje Uprawlenije Lagerei; in English: Chief Administration of Corrective Labour Camps and Colonies) operated as a state within a state. Its powers escalated as citizens of various nationalities, including Poles, suffered repressions from the 1930s. The mass deportations of Polish families to the Soviet Union began after 17 September 1939.

It is difficult to estimate how many people were forced to live in Siberia and other areas within the GULAG. Many prisoners disappeared without trace and attempts to determine the number of victims continue.
