Originally a WW1 Medal of Military Merit this medal was also issued briefly during WW2 with the inclusion of the 1940 bar and was known as the Medal for Outstanding acts. A total of eleven New Zealanders received this scarce medal. Colonels Barrington and King and Captian Griffiths for assisting the 3rd Greek Mountian Brigade in training and during the battles of Rimini, Bellaria and also Rubicone in Italy in 1944. Col Benjamin Barrington, later Brigadier DSO OBE ED Mid (his medal entitlement shown) later went on to be appointed Col Commendant of the RNZEME in 1949. Col Russell King, also Brigadier CBE DSO Mid later became the Honerary Physician to Her Majesty the Queen. Captian Jack Griffiths lator Major MC Mid was also Aide de Camp to General Freyberg and later General Officer commanding 2nd NZEF 1941 to 1945. He also captained the NZ All Blacks in ther 2nd test against Australia in 1936.
