Original WW2 RNZAF Irvin Flying Jacket. This use to belong to a Pilot named Taylor that got shot down KIA in Europe then another New Zealand Pilot used it named 'Red' FLTLT Maurice (Red) Mayston 485 NZ Spitfire Squadron as pictured on Jacket. 485 Squadron, known as New Zealand's Spitfire squadron, flying one of the war's most iconic aircrafts.

Mayston kept his friend's warm woollen bomber jacket, eventually taking it back home to New Zealand to return to his mother. But she did not want any of his things so Mayston would let his children wear the jacket, eventually donating it to a museum 50+ years ago, The museum must have closed down and was sold to a collector, I ended up with the Jacket and was at my shop for a few years. Only in the last 4 weeks I started to go in to the history of this Jacket and found that RED is Mayston and is still alive I had to meet him.
I went last weekend to see 'RED' in a Wellington rest home for the first time I've met him interesting man happy to see his flying jacket for the first time in 50+ years. He was happy but also shed a tear on wearing his flying jacket. One of our last Spitfire combat Pilots still alive who shot down the first planes on D-Day.

On D-Day in 1944, Mayston flew in one of four squadron groups from the 485. The group of four planes shot down the first two German bombers over the Normandy battlefield that day after his commanding officer, Johnnie Houlton, decided to fly inland instead of patrolling the beach as they were ordered to do. Mayston shot down the second plane.

Of the 220 pilots killed while flying Spitfires or Seafires during World War II, 34 were serving with 485 Squadron at the time.
