Hi, this auction is for;
1 x Sterling silver case presented to Wiremu Ngata, engraved with the Te Aute college crest & motto "Whakatangata kia kaha" 1 Corinthians 16,13 & copy of his complete military records.

Wiremu Ngata (1907-80) son of Sir Apirana Ngata enlisted for the 28th Maori battalion in 1939 & was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the headquarters company. He served in Greece & was wounded in Crete in 1941 & returned to NZ for medical treatment. He returned to the Battalion when it was stationed in Italy. On his return from the war, Ngata worked for Maori affairs & travelled around NZ recording waiata from the different areas. The recordings are held in RNZ archives. In 1961 he was appointed private secretary to the Minister of Maori affairs, Hon J R Hanan. He became editor of the Maori text of Te Ao Hou from its first issue until mid 1961.
