Description
Blue amber is the rarest of all ambers, and before the Indonesian discovery it was only found in the Dominican Republic and in small quantities in Mexico. The Sumatra amber that Starborn Creations is mining in a small area of Sumatra is found in a primary deposit in between coal layers that range in age from 15-25 million years old, some layers are even older. Less than 1% of all the amber recovered is of blue color.
Under artificial light, the amber appears like ordinary amber, but under sunlight it has an intense fluorescent blue glow. When held against the sun it will appear like ordinary amber, and under ultraviolet light it will glow a bright milky-blue. This effect can be compared to the ocean, which, although transparent, can appear anything from light blue to dark blue to black, depending on depth, mass, salinity, etc.
The piece itself weighs 60.5 grams and has approximate dimensions of 93 mm length, 50 mm width, and 27 mm height (Irregular). Magnificent comes to mind when I describe this. Top grade blue color and partly polished. This is one heck of a piece.
NOTE: 25 mm is approximately 1 inch.
