This auction is for a gorgeous Awaji Pottery Monochrome Hand Thrown Vase, in a rare and beautiful Iridescent Cobalt Blue circa 1891 -1918. It has the incised Sanpei Flag Mark and Japan the country of origin. The Sanpei Flag mark was thought to be started by the kiln around 1870 - 1880.
Awaji pottery has got its name after the Japanese island at where it was made during a period of about one hundred years, between 1830 and 1939. In late 1930's the last of the kilns is closed. This is a very rare and collectible Awaji pottery vase. From the photos, you can see the beautiful “Abalone shell internal shining “ on the surface of the vase.
The vase has some thin and tiny nibbles/chips at bottom rim as shown on the photo attached.
It measures about 200mm tall with 95mm across at the widest points of the body.
