Listing Detail Tabs

The State of Katanga was a prominent feature of headlines in our newspapers between 1960 and 1962, when a major war took place there as the United Nations invaded Congo and tried to conquer the small country of Katanga.

Katanga declared its independence from Congo in 1960, and was finally conquered by the combined armies of the UN and Congo at the start of 1963. It is now part of Democratic Republic of Congo. During its time of independence, it issued stamps, and in this collection are included some of the 1961 Arts & Sculptures definitive set, plus one independence overprint, one Christmas stamp, and one celebrating the inauguration of the new airline, showing a vintage steam train at Elizabethville, the capital.

These stamps are all mint unhinged, and in pristine condition.

Included with the collection is a brochure with details and maps of Katanga.
