I have here a beautiful one of Whakairo (Carved Table). The wood I was told is recycled Totara. This is a beautiful piece of art work that could be used to show case contemporary work with a road map of ancient style of carving. I have owned this table for approx 18years. The carving on the top of the table has in the middle the Hei Tiki, in this case it means the first Mortal Man, To the left side of the Tiki is the Te Ira Tangata. On the right side Te Ira Atua. The pattern around the centre is called Meke Tewha Also in the centre around the Hei Tiki is Manaia, these are the protectors from Evil. In most cases the pattern is seen and translated as the head of a bird body of a man and the Tail of a fish creating a balance of Sky Earth and Sea. The Hei Tiki and Manaia eyes are all inlaid with Paua shell. The rest of the table top are the patterns Hae Hae, representing Valleys and the Pata pata pattern representing ridges. All 4 legs of the Table are carved with Paua inlays. One leg represents Tangaroa. One leg represents Tanemahuta of the forests; this has the piko piko design. One leg represents Tawhirimatea or Nga hau e wha. One leg represents Whakararere meaning to go this way and that. The condition of the table. There is an approx 10 to 15 borer hole on the underside of the table. These have been dead a long time ago. On one of the legs, there is a piece approx 2cm that has a piece of same color wood putty filler. I can only assume the carver had a slight slip of his chisel. This is reflected in one of the posted photos but you must bear in mind, this is very old recycled timber. Testimony to that is also the black marks where nails were removed. Over all I think the condition of the Table/Coffee Table if you like is excellent. I would prefer buyer pick up. But if you arrange courier etc pick up, I will pack to the best of my ability.
