Schoenauer is known for his Lyrical Abstract Expressionism style, and paintings which exhibit skillful use of texture colour and composition. His subjects most consistently imaginary landscapes, horizons and free colour compositions.

An ambitious artist who explored the boundary between painting and sculpture, Schoenauer’s works look exceptional on a stark background, or to enhance the tones of a room.

Created early in his career, 1976 coinciding with his departure from West Germany – as I understand, this Schoenauer work was kept close by the artist until this year. This is a beautiful colourscape of green, red and purple – each fraction of the piece looks itself to be an individual composition.

Unusual to have a Shoenauer on canvas, this work exhibits some cracking due to the age and nature of the work. There is one small ‘crater’ in the work, exhibited in the last photograph of the front – it looks to have been there from inception, although it could be damage.

Gold, a colour admired and often implemented by Shoenauer is applied to the frame of the piece to accentuate the colours within.

A German Born New Zealand Artist who began exhibiting in 1969 during his study at the University of Cologne, and consistently exhibited locally with from 1984-2003, including exhibitions he shared with the likes of Dean Buchanan.

German articles on the up and coming painter suggested his paintings were “full of dreamlike aesthetics, on one side contrasting, but always in harmony, without contradictions. His painting style... radiates inner peace… there is not much more art can give”.
