Description
With an air of impressionism, this watercolour by revered New Zealand artist Ella Spicer is a lovely depiction of Rangitoto from Auckland. A picturesque landscape in serene autumn colours.
Otago born, Ella Spicer was a prolific watercolourist, who studied under painters Fanny Wimperis and Girolamo Nerli, and began exhibiting at age 15. From 1894 to 1900 she was a working member of the Otago Arts Society.
Spicer lived in Auckland from 1907 onwards, hence we are presented with this excellent example of local artwork. Her daughter Peggy Spicer also became a very well respected New Zealand artist, and they are both recognized for their landscape pieces especially.
The work overall is in tidy condition, but unfortunately there is widespread but minor foxing present on the mat, and a few noticeable spots on the work itself, too.
