RARE-FIND: 2 paintings
Offered here is a stunning and RARE matched PAIR of expertly painted colonial watercolours by listed artist, George Frederick Gregory (1821-1887). Gregory painted a small number of New Zealand views at Lake Rotomahana, the Devil's Caldron Near Tongariro, and Auckland etc.
~ Offered here for quick sale but may do better in a room auction.
THE VIEWS: Are believed to be of Lake Rotomahana possibly with an erupting snow-caped Mt Tarewera and other volcanoes in the distance and a rowboat in foreground of the first watercolour. it could also be Lake Tarewara.
The second watercolour shows an extensive snowed mountain range on the far side of the lake with a yacht and fern trees in the foreground.
Both signed G.F. Gregory, lower left.
DATE: Estimated to be circa 1850 or mid 19th century so prior to the famous volcanic eruption of 1886.
SIZE: Approximately 210 x 340mm and 195 x 340mm.
CONDITION: Excellent. NO foxing, soiling, toning, tears, repairs. Laid on card, unframed.
