Description
Etude de nu au Manteau (Study of a Nude in the Cloak)
by Marcel Gromaire (1929).
Size: 75.5 cm by 55.5 cm
Marcel Gromaire (1892-1971) was a French painter. He painted many works inspired by social issues, and is often associated with Social Realism. An encounter with the art collector Dr.Girardin, established his career as an artist, when he bought the whole of the work of Gromaire. When Dr. Girardin died in 1953, was the museum in Paris 78 paintings and a collection of watercolors.
I have copied this dark, erotic, smoldering, nude image from a postcard sent to me several years ago by a friend visiting the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris where the painting hangs.
In his autodidactic artistic development, Marcel Gromaire (1892-1971) was influenced by such painters as Matisse, Cézanne, and later by Fernand Léger.
During his service in the Great War of 1914-18 he gathered the basic impressions which would determine his later artistic career… his work finally being recognized at his 1933 exhibition in the De Bâle art gallery.
