About the artist: Sophia Turol was born in Poland. From early years Sophia had a great passion to paint and often spent hours creating pictures. In 1939 came World War II and all dreams and desires were vanished. She was at the age of 12 when Russians occupied Poland and sent her family out of Poland to labour camps in Siberia. The life was very sad and hard. Despite her sad experiences, or perhaps because of them, it made Sophia determined to continue painting and express her love for trees, land rivers and mountains. In 1944 Sophia, her little brother and 731 other Polish orphans arrived to Pahiatua. After matriculation in 1947 Sophia was offered a chance to go to Venice to study art but had to turn it down :I couldn't leave my little brother as he was only six and I was all he had". They lost both parents during the war.
Sophia passed away nearly 3 years ago and I have acquired some of her collection. There is nothing more that Sophia would want than having her art on the walls of those who appreciate them.
