"Portrait of a Lady"

(possibly a self portrait, similarity to Olive in photos held at Auckland Art Gallery).

Watercolour 270 x 240mm

Clearly signed Olive Goldie verso.
Exhibition #6.

Interesting work which expresses both the angelic and darker sides of the human condition, all in the one work. One can only speculate how much influence Charles had on her work.

Born in Sydney, Olive Ethylwyn Cooper married our greatest internationally recognized artist, Charles Frederick Goldie at the age of 35 years on 18th November 1920 in Sydney. Goldie was fifty.

Both normally resided in Auckland, but the marriage was celebrated in Sydney, Australia, as Goldie's family opposed him marrying the much younger milliner. Olive had been employed in Karangahape Road French Millinery, an Art deco style emporium, modelled upon Le Bon Marche, Paris.

The Goldies created a home and garden in Remuera, where Goldie took many photographs of Olive in their garden. Charles deferred returning to portraiture for almost a decade.

Olive pursued her artistic bent in portraiture, pencil sketches competently shaded and watercolours filled with confident contrasting colours.

With Charles Goldie's works selling for millions and small works of his student Vera Cummings selling for thousands. (Vera Cummings. A Hot Day. Oil on canvas. Fetched. $7,250. Auction 31 July, 2013 at International Art) we must assume a work by Mrs Charles Goldie would be worth just as much. We will start the bidding with a humble one thousand and see what happens ;- )
