Large scale Landscape Photographs from my series 'Lay of the Land' which exhibited at Dunedin school of Art exhibition SITE this year!
Mankind's relationship with nature is conflicted. Within contemporary culture we see humans trying to live in harmony with nature, yet simultaneously attempting to control and dominate it. It has become difficult to see a distinction between what is natural and what is artificially constructed. There is an embedded ideology in our society, where nature is perceived as ‘beautiful”, resulting in constructed and ruined landscapes becoming a spectacle to be consumed in the same way the picturesque is consumed as a spectacle.
Lay of the Land (2016) is a series of photographs exploring our industrialised culture and the continually changing landscapes of the South Island, of New Zealand. Presenting photographic works that create a parallel between the construction of the landscape and the construction of the photograph. The series is drawing attention to sites of change, industrialism and mankind's ‘improvements’ through geology, and resource extraction. The works present a depiction of the distance between us and nature, representing the impossibility of true nature in our post nature world.
