I took this photograph on colour transparency film using a Hasselblad camera in the south Arabian city of Mirbat, Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman in 2001.

I was fascinated by this old, frayed prayer mat hanging on a wooden peg in an abandoned house. To me, there was the additional charm of the upturned half coconut shell on the shelf behind, which may well have been used as a dipper for pre-prayer ablutions. The final ‘seal’ for me was the beautiful orange colors of the wall.
