Description
Born in Invercargill in 1949, but growing up in Tauranga - Brown went on to attend Elam School of Fine art, and studied under Pat Hanly, Colin McCahon and Garth Tapper. ”McCahon encouraged Brown to pursue his own personal vision and utilize distinct motifs in his work”. Brown widely researches a concept before undertaking a work - he is know as “a painter of ideas and symbols… his imagery is immediate and based on strong familiar physical presences”. In 2004 Brown was awarded the ONZM for services to painting and printmaking.
The pacific was common subject matter for him in the 1990’s - he created a series of woodblock prints in 1992 in this style - often editioned of 30 - titles included - Pacific Solar, Maori Pacific, Pacific Reading, Pacific Mix - and of course, this work - Pacific Sun. These works share several motifs, and a particular use of stricter geometric forms.
Brown is a very highly regarded artist, who continues to receive widespread acclaim. This is an excellent opportunity to own a sizeable work, rarely offered for sale - in fact, I can find no sales history of other editions of this piece.
