Description
Sir William Russell Flint, R.A., P.R.W.S. (1880-1969)
“Strange Interior, Languedoc” - Exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1951 - But I believe the print dates to 1952. Produced as a limited edition of 500 artist signed proofs - It would have originally sold at £7.17.6. It is an exceptionally collectable piece from one of the most recognized watercolourists of the 20th Century.
The print is signed in pencil on the bottom right, with F.A.T Guild stamp, and lettered A.C.J (seen in place of a numbering system on some Flint prints).
It is unframed, but in very good condition.
“The “Strange Interior” of this new picture by England's greatest living water colourist is to be found in a mysterious labyrinth of semi-underground vaults in Languedoc, the ancient province of Southern France. Although little is known of them, the vaults are presumed to be part of the neighbouring ruins of the XIIIth century or ealier wine-making establishment of the Knights Templar. A chance acquaintance gained Sir William Russell Flint the entree to this closely-guarded underworld. He was enthralled by his favourite combination of ancient masonry, and limped, rippling water. The use of the altar-like erection by the pool, the orifice, the niche in the wall, he could not discover…. He has brilliantly captured the strange beauty of the setting with softly mellowed browns and cool, unfathomable blues. “
I’m sure a biography of the artist needn’t be added - he is iconic, and so prolific that limited prints of new works continue to be released.
The print measures: 565w x 415h The mat is: 745w x 655h
