Description
Roy Dalgarno, was raised in Melbourne, Australia - where he studied at the National Gallery art school between 1926, and 1930. The following four years, he continued to study art, split between the Academy of Art under Dattilo Rubbo, and the East Sydney Technical Drawing College.
This etching is a gritty and captivating portrayal of blue-collar workers, subjects that Dalgarno was drawn to, and excelled in his demonstration of. Fantastic example of the artist's trademark skill in the portrayal of movement.
Another example of this etching is held in the collection of the University of Wollongong, in NSW.
“Described as a socialist bohemian and a social realist painter, his work commissioned by the Australian maritime and mining trade unions is perhaps the best remembered, for its depiction of Australian workers and working conditions”.
A highly celebrated artist within Australasia, Dalgarno was Australian born, but spent the later portion of his life (from 1975) in Auckland .
