Description

A widely celebrated American born Printmaker, Helen Hyde is most well recognized for her ‘Japonism’ prints focusing on women and children.

At age 12, she studied under Ferdinand Richardt. Years later in Paris, she developed an affinity for Japanese art - Mary Cassat’s works in the Japanese style, were of strong influence to the artist. Hyde eventually “studied with Emil Carson, and Kano Tomonobu - the final master painter at the famous Kano school of Japanese painting.”

She moved to Japan and continued to learn, focusing predominantly on colour woodblock printing, even studying under Emil Orlik. From 1903 -1914 “Hyde resided in Japan... and refined colour woodblock painting to a fine art”. In its tribute to Hyde, The American Magazine of Art remarked “There is a charm about her rendition of children... which gives token to her sympathy with childhood; and with her passing has gone from the world of life of cheerfulness and courage and high purpose which, like a flower of sweet fragrance, has added beauty to life”

Both examples I have for sale are fantastic testaments to this reputation.

“A vast collection of her works are within the confines of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C." A copy of ‘White Peacock’ belongs to the Smithsonian Museum, and another to the Brooklyn Museum.

These pieces are numbered and signed in pencil, but I’m not sure how many of each were produced - her prints are recognized as rare, and usually only offered about 200 editions.

They are a clear demonstration of the culmination of her skill and experiences in Japan.

The work for sale, ‘White Peacock’ is somewhat faded, mostly noticeable by the very pale yellows in the peacock feathers. There are some creases in the work - but it is a good remaining example of a respected work.

Framed excellently, complimenting the pink tones in the work.

An ex John Leech Gallery piece.
