Description
Medium sized book
Still with the price label of $34.99 on it
The book is in a nice but not perfect 2nd hand condition - read and handled with a name on front page
Iasi, Romania, the early 1950s. A deaf, mute and frail man is found on the steps of a hospital. A young nurse, Safta, brings paper and pencils so that he might draw. Slowly, painstakingly, memories appear on the page: a hillside, a stable, a car, a country house, dogs and mirrored rooms and samovars in what is now a lost world.
These memories are Safta's too. For the man Augustin, had been the son of the cook at Safta's family manor at Poiana, where the two shared a connection that bypassed words. Safta went out into the world and Augustin stayed behind. And then the war came, and after it the Communists, and nothing they knew was left untouched. Now there are things that Augustin must tell Safta that may be more than simple drawings can convey.
Beautiful, spare and intense, Painter of Silence captures the loss and the hope of a tragic time through the extraordinary vision of a mute outsider.
