Description
This is an auction for SOLDIER by John A Lee.
From the inside flap:
"SOLDIER is the story of one man's war, of a New Zealand Private who won the DCM for gallantry in action, and later, when his nerves had become shell-shocked to the point where suicide was beckoning, had his arm shattered by a German shell. This narrative begins with the soldier penniless on leave in London seeking a free meal in a YMCA canteen. Here he meets Hawea, a New Zealand girl with a prosperous high-country background, and here they fall in love. The soldier returns to France, plays his part in stemming the German breakthrough in March 1918, loses his left arm, and is sent to the New Zealand military hospital at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. He and Hawea meet again, then the soldier is invalidated back to New Zealand. The first draft of John A. Lee's singular novel was written in early 1918 whilst recovering, in England, from losing an arm during a German grenade attack on Allied trenches in France. 'Written,' he says, 'with my very blood, while all the past was in my mind and my wounds unhealed'."
