DESCRIPTION: Richard Pearse flew his aeroplane in 1902 and 1903. The flights were of short duration for the purpose of testing the airframe and engine, but up to that time, no-one had achieved as much. Eighteen witnesses described to George Bolt and Harold Cederman flights made by Pearse. He had built a working engine mainly from scrap materials in his rudimentary workshop: a tremendous feat, especially in view of the fact that the only information available to him was contained in periodicals and a few books. It is accepted that this engine was the lightest and most powerful then in existence. Subsequently he constructed the aeroplane.
