Watercare engineer Ian Winson was seriously injured in a gas explosion in Onehunga, Auckland, in 2011, an incident that was a significant news event at the time. The explosion killed one of his colleagues, cost Ian his legs, caused severe injuries to his arms, and left him close to death. Before the explosion Ian's life had revolved around work, sport and family. In one day he went from being an Ironman competitor and organiser of an iconic Auckland running event in the Waitakere Ranges, to an amputee requiring much medical intervention and months of rehabilitation just to reach a stage of basic mobility. His story is one of bravery, incredible determination, redefining oneself, a family's love, and an unerring hope.
