Art of William Light by David Elder

Colonial William Light came to South Australia in 1836 as the first Surveyor-General of the new colony. He was to die heere three years later in tragic circumstances, having selected and surveyed the site of Adelaide, the capital, with care and fortitude.

Adventurous and cultured, Light journeyed widely during and after the Peninsular War. He sketched, painted and kept journals as he went, revealing early an eye for detail and a concern for accuracy that were to mark his mapping and surveying of the South Australian Settlement.

A surprising number of his artworks have survived. This full selection includes all his South Australian works, and many others representing scenes of St Helena, Bombay, Europe and the Mediterranean from Spain to Egypt. The Adelaide city council undertook the publication of these works. In the accompanying text, David Elder has drawn on his own extensive researches and writings in describing Light's life and times.
