Description
The Life & Art Of William Strutt 1825-1915
Heather Curnow text: William Strutt artworks.
48 cm x 36 cm approx
47 colour plates and numerous b/w illustrations. is a little sunned in William Strutt (1825-1915) an Englishman who travelled to Australia in 1850. In Melbourne he met and married his wife and found employment for a time as an illustrator for the Australian Magazine. In 1852 Strutt was caught up in the gold rush in the area around Ballarat but despite 18 months there he found little success as a prospector. Strutt remained in Australia until 1862 and despite little success as an artist while there he had continued to make sketches of many of the notable events in the colony. It was from these sketches that he would work on his return to England and from which his most notable paintings, "Black Thursday, February 6th 1851", "Bushrangers, Victoria, Australia, 1852" and "The Burial of Burke", would derive.
