This is an auction for OLD BLUE: THE RAREST BIRD IN THE WORLD, by Mary Taylor.

Amazon.com review:

"FIVE STARS!! This book is a gem for birdwatchers and anyone else interested in ecology, conservation, rehabilitation, and species restoration. It is a children's book that tells the story of the Chatham Island Black Robin in New Zealand - a species whose population had dwindled to the point of a single female left in the world. She was called "Old Blue". My wife and I are birdwatchers and spent several months in New Zealand. We did a presentation to our local bird club in Pendleton, Oregon, about that adventure, and in the program we read this book to the audience accompanied with a powerpoint of photographs of the illustrations in the book. You could have heard a pin drop during that reading. This is a wonderful book - a real treasure - about how the species was rehabilitated and restored, and the ingenious methods discovered by the New Zealand Wildlife Service for doing so. What they experimented with and learned has become the gold standard for species rehabilitation. This is a wonderful tale for people of any age; a story of people who were caring, inventive, committed, who faced enormous challenges and were finally successful."

From Wikipedia:

"The Chatham Island Robin is an endangered bird from the Chatham Islands of New Zealand. It was first described by Walter Buller in 1872. Unlike its mainland counterparts, its flight capacity is somewhat reduced. Evolution in the absence of mammalian predators made it vulnerable to introduced species such as cats and rats, and it became extinct on the main island of the Chatham group before 1871..."
