"AND THE BAND PLAYED ON is the amazing story of one of the band members who famously played as the Titanic sank, written by his grandson. On April 14, 1912, when the Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank, 1500 passengers and crew lost their lives. As the order to abandon ship was given, the orchestra took their instruments on deck and continued to play as the ship went down. The violinist, 21 year-old Jock Hume, knew that his fiancée, Mary, was expecting their first child, the author's mother. A century later, Christopher Ward reveals a story of love, loss, and betrayal, and the catastrophic impact of Jock's death on two Scottish families. He paints a vivid portrait of an age in which class determined the way people lived."

"FIVE STARS!! This book starts with the band playing as Titanic is sinking, then looks at what happens in thedays, weeks, months and years that followed. The author is a grandson of one of the bandsmen who died. The ship's owners and the agencies treated his family badly. The book indicates that there was time to evacuate a lot more people, but that there were not enough lifeboats. There was also the audacity of the ship's agent demanding the families pay for the bandsmen's lost buttons and epaulettes, while also stopping their pay from the moment the ship sank. The Titanic cast a long shadow over the families of the bereaved."
