"A typically beautiful Folio Society book. This is sort of a history of London, from Roman times up to the 1990s. I say "sort of" because it is not really a complete history of London, but actually what the title says: a portrait. It consists of extracts from source documents such as essays, diaries, letters, novels, and other accounts, mostly by Londoners themselves, but also by visitors to London through the centuries. These accounts are introduced by the author, whose text also adds historical context and ties the book together. Although not a complete history of London, it is an interesting account and there are some really great descriptions of London life you would probably never otherwise come across. Like all Folio editions, it is extremely well illustrated with paintings, drawings, sketches, and, towards the end, a few photographs."
