Description
This is an auction for 'LAST PORT LYTTELTON': THE LIFE AND REMINISCENCES OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM LAIRD WHITBY 1838-1922, by Colin Whitby Venimore.
From the inside flap:
"A Norfolk lad, William Laird Whitby was not quite fifteen when he joined the crew of the troopship 'Progress' on January 11th, 1853. He has left accounts of this and subsequent voyages. Whilst on the barque 'Peltoma' he became an eye witness of the Charge of the Light Brigade, and became, too, slightly involved in the Battle of Inkerman. His story comes alive through his narratives, letters, and reminiscences. From the richness of his fifty years at sea, we catch a fascinating glimpse of 19th Century maritime life and history - especially history of early New Zealand coastal trading. William Whitby arrived in Lyttelton in 1859. As to Captain Whitby himself, there emerges the portrait of a dedicated and competent seaman, a loving husband, and a man, too, with a deep trust in the Almighty."
