The Rich
A New Zealand History
Stevan Eldred-Grigg

From the wool barons of the 19th. century to the high fliers of the late 1980s, the story of those who are very wealthy in this supposedly egalitarian society is a fascinating one.

In this book, historian and novelist Stevan Eldred-Grigg provides a lively popular history of the very rich in New Zealand from earliest colonial times to the present day. His sources range from Burkes Colonial Gentry to the testy titbits of Felicity Ferret.

The author shows how great landowners and business barons during the high colonial period were free to luxuriate in silks, to brandish cigars, and to enjoy the first heyday of the very rich. He describes the later rise of the new industrial dynasties. The book ends with the frantic hypsters of the 1980s upstarts who often fell flat during the Crash but since then have dusted themselves off and once more started to amass large fortunes.

In good condition, some fading to spine and browning of pages,
