"For a time in the 1930s John A Lee was on air every Sunday night talking about the swagger days in NZ and related subjects.

This book, in part, is a distillation of those broadcasts and listeners' letters. In Jack Lee's hands we also get something approaching a full survey of a fascinating side of our country's story, covering at road level, as it were, the good and bad times form the 1860s onwards. Times characterised by the three R's of the road - Roughnecks, Rolling Stones & Rouseabouts.

Roughnecks are the pioneer workforce, swag-carriers to a man at certain stages of NZ's growth, the Rolling Stones are the professional swaggers, the legendary characters such as the Shiner and Barney Whiterats, while the Rouseabouts are a miscellany of blokes form the gold diggers and waginsers to the harvesters and bush-whackers. But all mix and mingle, as the times decided, in the companionship of campfire or station hut.

Includes an array of illustrations form contemporary sources and a lively anthology of swagger and outback items, ranging from some little-known station ballads to first-hand descriptions of a 'hatter' and of experiences on the swag.
