Description
“Out in the Cold” by David Grant
“Pacifists and Conscientious Objectors in New Zealand during World War II. It is not widely known that hundreds of New Zealanders spent WWII in prison or detention camps – surrounded by cell walls or barbed wire, watch over by guards, frustrated by meaningless labour and worn down by boredom – in their own country. Ironically while NZ soldiers fought alongside other allies overseas to defend democracy, pacifists and conscientious objectors at home were being punished for defending their right to oppose war.
Comprehensive account, including experiences in detention camps, based on the author’s MA thesis. Author has used both archival and oral sources, interviewing over 50 people. Private papers, diaries and letters as well as official and newspaper material were also used”.
Hard covered, 270 page book with dust jacket. It is a 1986 first edition published by Reed Metheun. Well illustrated. The dust jacket has some shelf rubbing. The book is in very good condition.
