A History of Forestry Research in New Zealand
By John Kininmonth
Commemorating 50 years of research at the Forestry Research Institute 1947-97
The main purpose of this book is to document the first 50 years of research (1947-97) at the Forestry Research Institute. It describes its beginnings, its growth through the first four decades, how it coped with the upheavals of science reform in the 1980s and early 1990s, and then the transition to a Crown Research Institute (CRI) from 1992.
But this history would not be complete without some reference to other organisations that have made contributions to forestry research. Thus mention is made of the substantial amount of research carried out by, or on behalf of, the Forest Service in the period from its beginning in 1919 until FRI was established as a Forest Experiment Station in Rotorua in 1947, and there is a brief flashback to earlier times, to the influence of groups such as the Maori, the early botanical explorers, and those responsible for setting up the first state plantations.
