Description
THE HEART OF COLONIAL AUCKLAND 1865-1910, Terence Hodgson (First Edition, 1992)
This book is a lively look at what is now central Auckland, but which for many years WAS Auckland, between 1865 and 1910. The first twenty-five years of Auckland's growth from 1840 to 1865 saw the beginnings of many of its institutions and a few elements of its town plan. However, when central government shifted to Palmerston ?North in 1865, Auckland developed architecturally in areas of commerce, banking and insurance, warehousing and manufacturing, basic amenities, entertainment, social institutions, edification, and housing for the rich and poor. Terence Hodgson looks at all these aspects, and uses newspaper accounts and numerous early photographs to bring those times alive. He provides a vivid account of how Auckland developed its character, and describes the important buildings of architectural interest, many of which still stand today.
