This is an auction for HISTORY'S WORST DECISIONS AND THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THEM, by Stephen Weir.

Amazon.com review:

"This is a perfect book for enjoyable light reading. Robert Austin thought it might be fun to have a hunt of rabbits on his estate near Melbourne so he had his brother bring 24 of them from England. Unfortunately, some got away and the survivors did what rabbits do best. With no natural predators they multiplied like, well, rabbits. To this day the Aussies are trying to eradicate them. That's one bad decision. Another is that of the four assassins who were trying to kill the Archduke Ferdinand. They bungled the first attempt because one lost his nerve; another threw a bomb that bounced off the Archduke's car and injured several bystanders; one didn't do anything at all when he realized he was standing next to a cop; and the fourth failed to recognize the Duke or his car. After 90 minutes, they retired for lunch at a nearby delicatessen. Walking out, there was the archduke's car, unescorted, going through traffic at a crawl, having taken the wrong route to the hospital for a visit. The rest, as they say, is history. Then there's the story of the Titanic. It has been told many times but Stephen Weir's account is still fresh and appealing. Among his other stories: Eric the Red's great land swindle (Greenland); General Haig and the Battle of the Somme; Maginot's Line; Napoleon's march into Russia; Mao's Great Leap Forward; Churchill's Gallipoli adventure; Grünenthall's miracle drug Thalidomide."
