New Zealand Forestry by A.L. Poole

With many b/w photographs and maps

Many New Zealanders wonder how it is that their country has passed in just over a century from a land with an over-abundance of timber to one in which fine-quality native timber is in short supply, and are not certain what exactly forestry is accomplishing.

This book provides the answer. By means of simple written narrative and with many illustrations it shows how the pressing need for agricultural and pastoral land resulted in the rapid destruction of most of our native forests and how, to avert a future shortage of timber, there were created the large plantations of exotic forest trees that today provide over half the country's timber. It also shows why forests in the mountainous hinterland must be maintained in good condition if severe flooding of farmlands (and some cities) of the alluvial plains is to be avoided, and explains why control of introduced browsing animals is an essential part of forestry.

Herein also will be found an account of the many operations necessary in growing trees as a commercial crop, of how mature trees are extracted from the forest, and of the various products into which they are converted.
