Marching on... Sonja Davies

Sonja Davies's second book, Marching On, is a piece of New Zealand history seen through the eyes of a veteran socialist, feminist and peace activist. It is the sequel to the first volume of Davies's life, Bread and Roses, and chronicles her time as a leading unionist, an MP, a traveller and a battler , through the 1980s to 1996.

She was all these things amid such significant events as the 1981 Springbok tour, Rogernomics, the Gulf War, anti-nuclear protests and David Lange's resignation as prime minister.

Davies was Labour MP for Pencarrow between 1987 and 1993, a period of dramatic change in welfare and the economy.

In this book, she describes her six years in Parliament as "a whole new world, one that I had no idea would be so traumatic".

Well documented are her struggles in Parliament, her despair over disharmony within the Labour Party and her own treatment there - John Banks called her "Grannie", Paul East "Auntie".
