part of Foreword:
In these times when farming is a science and every aspect of it a field for specialists, only an exceptionally well-informed writer, or a very presumptuous one, would contemplate writing a book in which the Sheep provides a theme.
I don't belong to the former category. I've had quite a lot to do with sheep at one time or another, but what I know about them wouldn't fill a notebook, let alone a book. Two considerations have led me to take the adventuresome step; first, a feeling that New Zealand's most important inhabitant should be accorded a more prominent place in the literature of the country...
Hundreds of books have been written about our pioneers, our footballers, and about others who have helped to make New Zealand and its name in the world; but the animal responsible for putting New Zealand on the map has known little glory and honour.
Perhaps that's because the majority of those who write about sheep have lived too close to their subject to be able to look at it objectively and, not unnaturally in a country where all flesh is grass, those writers tend to look upon the Sheep with the discerning eye of science rather than the prejudiced eye of affection...
My purpose, however, isn't to improve the Sheep; all I hope to do is to improve its public image.
I'm fond of sheep and interested in everything that goes with them, so no choice of subjects to write about could be more attractive that one which would not only let me recall my own fond associations with sheep, but also provide a reason, or perhaps an excuse, for setting out again on that beloved road that runs between Northland and Southland to drop in on some of our sixty million supporters and try to learn a little more about them.
