Going Bush: New Zealanders and Nature in the Twentieth Century. Kirstie Ross. 2008 1st edition

This book looks at changes in the NZ landscape and land uses, with old photos

In the early years of the century picnics were popular, but they weren’t really in “the bush.” Tramping was also a popular pastime; and hunting increased with the release of deer and other animals into the bush

At the beginning of the 20th Century the New Zealand bush was still a dangerous and wild place – many parts were still being cleared for farming
Erosion followed the clearing of the bush from some areas. The Forest and Bird Protection Society actively campaigned against clearing more land whilst the farmers wanted more. Men, such as Herbert Guthrie-Smith (although a farmer himself), realised that more trees needed to be planted to counteract the erosion

Gradually, as there became less to preserve, people started to want to conserve what “bush” forest or wilderness areas left. Arbor Day was established to encourage the planting and protection of town trees. Schools taught “Nature Study” and many provided gardens for the pupils. Food growing was encouraged, especially during the Wars
National Parks were declared in a bid to save some of original NZ and a “Keep NZ Green” campaign is still active
