When the Massey Drainage Extension Service was inaugurated in New Zealand in 1946, Dermot Bowler was appointed its first supervisor. After 16 years of intensive field experience he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Soil Water Management at Massey University, Palmerston North in 1962 where he has been active in teaching, research and extension.

He has travelled widely as both consultant and observer in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, South East Asia, Taiwan and Japan and is well equipped to bring together practical information for those who must cope with the difficulties and problems of using wet soils. He previously co-authored The Drainage of Farm Lands.
