Stunning colour photographs throughout.
The dominant feature of the landscape of NZ is its snow-capped mountains. They form the backbone of a nation, over 250,000 square kilometres in area, that is nowhere more than 110 kilometres from the coast.
Aotearoa - land of the long white cloud - is what the first weary Polynesian navigator to reach NZ's shores called the mist shrouded country that loomed off the bows of his salt-encrusted canoe. Kupe was that far-ranging man. He discovered that there were no inhabitants to be found; only the tumbling mountain streams, the cries of exotic birds and the calls of animals broke the sound of the primeval silence.
The presence of the mountain gods is, today, amply demonstrated by the trails of smoke that coil into the air from the crater summits. Meanwhile, the orb of heaven shines down on lakes far below, where mere mortal man may find peace and harmony by the blessed, blue waters.
