He Tete Kura reviews the growth of the Maori addiction treatment sector and examines the lessons for a new generation of workers and leaders. The title comes from the whakatauki ‘Mate atu he tete kura, ara mai he tete kura’. The koru which is often associated with this whakatauki represents birth, regrowth and regeneration and symbolises sustainability and the passing of knowledge and resources from one generation to the next.

He Tete Kura is an account of opportunities and events from a ‘flax-roots up’ perspective. It was launched at Owhata Marae in Rotorua.

"At a time when Maori services in the addiction and mental health sector are feeling vulnerable it is important that we can show what works and highlight the gains made by Maori services and practitioners," says co-author Terry Huriwai, of Matua Raki. He Tete Kura also identifies future directions and potential foci for continuing to build Maori responsiveness in the addiction treatment sector as well as some of the pitfalls to be avoided.

The origin of the book dates back to 2004 when Matua Raki accepted the challenge laid down by the participants at the pre-Cutting Edge hui in Palmerston North to record a history of the Maori addiction (alcohol and other drug as well as problem gambling) treatment sector.

He Tete Kura records some of the service developments (including closures) over the past 28 years but also looks at workforce development during the same period. The CIT Kaupapa Maori course and Te Ngaru Learning Systems are all covered. The final sections look at emergent themes in the history and attempt to take the lessons of the past in order to make sense of tomorrow.
