The life and work of Geo Valentine who lived from 1852 to 1890, who was born in Dundee, Scotland, and arrived in NZ in 1882. Text traces his history as a photographer, the areas & the times
The majority of Valentine's work excludes any human presence, which adds to the timelessness of his majestic photographs. His was a significant contribution to recording NZ as it once was
Works include town, house & port scenes, plus bush scenery, but he is best remembered for his views of the Rotorua thermal districts made in 1885
Early views of Ohinemutu & Whakarewarewa with a portrait of Guide Kate, Keita Rangitukia Middlemass
A chapter is devoted to the Pink & White Terraces at Rotomahana & 2 others to the eruption of Mt Tarawera & its aftermath, with views of the demolished Terraces & surrounding bush, destruction at Te Wairoa & the craters of Mt Tarawera
Also Pacific photographs taken on a journey in 1887
