The armed survey vessel Lady Nelson is one of the most celebrated ships in Australian maritime history. In 1800 she became the first vessel to sail through Bass Strait from West to East, and in February 1802 she brought the first Europeans into Port Phillip.

This account of that visit was recorded by her commander, John Murray, in the ship's log book. Murray wrote that in places the land around the harbour resembled a beautiful park, and that he had found excellent water 'and plenty of it to water the Grand Fleet of England'

His comment, and those of Matthew Flinders who followed him, influenced the decision to establish Victoria's first official settlement, at Sullivan Bay, near Sorrento, the following year.

Murray's account gives a vivid picture of the Mornington Peninsula before European settlement. It also describes the first fatal encounter between the explorers and the local Aborigines.
