As the dated pen inscription on front flyleaf states, this book was a gift from the Judges and Masters of the High Court of New Zealand to D L Tompkins QC (Ex Libris plate in his name)

With its 6,000 main headword entries and 9,300 separate subentries this unique dictionary contains a wealth of historical and linguistic information including many unique New Zealand words and Maori words incorporated into English. The noted linguist H W Orsman began his research for the dictionary for his 1951 thesis and continued editing this dictionary for more than 40 years.

Second-hand book in overall Ex/VG condition. Dust jacket fading slightly at spine. 1cm+ tear to DJ at bottom of spine. Some scuffing to DJ and on right bottom back a ca. 5 cm long surface tear where blue ink surface has been removed. Reverse of DJ is foxed. There is a ca. 2.5cm tear bottom left edge of rear of DJ. Minor foxing to page edges. Otherwise very clean internally and stitching solid. Book itself has navy/blue cloth binding with gilt lettering. The tear at bottom of spine DJ goes through spine itself but is of minor concern.
