Spitfire Patrol is the gripping autobiography of a New Zealand pilot's experiences in aerial fighting during the Second World War. Cohn Gray joined the RAF in Britain in 1939. He fought over the Continent during the British Army's evacuation from Dunkirk in May 1940 and was in action during the Battle of Britain. He was involved in sweeps over France, bomber escorts, anti-shipping attacks, and night-flying. In January 1943, he was posted to North Africa where he fought over Tunisia and took part in the invasion of Sicily. He returned to active operations in England later that year, countering flying bombs, escorting bomber flights, making sweeps over the Ruhr, and taking part in the invasion of Arnhem and Nijmegen. In all, Gray took part in over 500 operational missions and claimed over 40 enemy aircraft destroyed or damaged. He was placed amongst the top ten scoring fighter pilots in the Commonwealth and was the top New Zealander 27.5

In addition to being a fascinating account of Gray's tour of duty, the book also discusses the comparative merits of fighter aircraft, particularly the various marks of Spitfire, describes vividly what it was like to dogfight, and answers the criticisms levelled at the RAF during the evacuation of Dunkirk. Gray brings alive the excitement and stresses faced by a fighter pilot as well as the tragedies of war. Please click here to ask a question
